Oversteppers, Ghosts, and Rock Stars

This collaborative, problem-solving workshop is designed for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who supervise speech-language pathology assistants (SLPAs). Using case scenarios that focus on three archetypes of supervisees and related situations, SLPs will have the opportunity to learn and share strategies and resources in order to provide solutions to the dilemmas presented. Appropriate application of scope of practice, coaching techniques, and communication systems will be emphasized during the session.

Learner Outcomes 

● Analyze complex supervisory scenarios to identify underlying breakdowns in scope of practice, use of data collection strategies, and professional communication

● Formulate intervention strategies to address scope of practice violations without damaging the supervisory relationship

● Apply scripting frameworks to support students in navigating difficult conversations

● Identify strategies to implement and improve communication protocols that eliminate data gaps and tracking breakdowns

● Implement coaching techniques that challenge and engage high-performing assistants while adhering to scope of practice
