Navigating ASHA Ethics Principle II in School-Based Practice
This course will explore the second principle in the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA’s) Code of Ethics (2023) for speech-language pathologists which relates to performing the highest level of professional competence and performance. Participants will have the opportunity to analyze ethical practices involving the SLP’s scope of practice, maintaining professional standards, and professional advocacy given related case scenarios.

● Explain the second principle of ASHA’s Code of Ethics (2023) with supporting examples
● Describe how evidence-based practice is connected to ethical practices in school-based settings
● Identify at least two resources that can be utilized when experiencing an ethical dilemma

Speaker Description:
Susan McDonald, M.S., CCC-SLP is a state-licensed and ASHA certified speech-language pathologist with over 25 years of combined experience working in speech-language pathology, higher education and teaching English as a foreign language. Susan currently serves as Program Director and faculty for the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) Program at Cerritos College in Norwalk, California, where she teaches introductory and advanced clinical coursework, and coordinates internships for the SLPA students. She has presented several professional development workshops on topics such as supervision, ethics, appropriate assessment strategies for culturally and linguistically diverse children, and vocabulary development. She obtained a second master’s degree in instructional design and technology from California State University Fullerton in 2022.
